NRBC Bank Starts Nationwide Bangla QR Payments Campaign

NRBC Bank has launched a nationwide campaign to expand Bangla QR acceptance, beginning with merchant onboarding in Dhaka’s Motijheel district.

NRBC Bank launched a nationwide campaign on July 5 to promote Bangla QR payments across Bangladesh, beginning with a rally and merchant-acquisition activity in Dhaka’s Motijheel commercial district.

The bank said staff distributed Bangla QR codes to local merchants after the campaign’s inauguration. Customers can scan those codes through NRBC Bank’s Planet app, while participating merchants gain a standardized way to receive digital payments without relying on a proprietary acceptance format.

Acceptance expansion is the operational test

Bangla QR is part of Bangladesh Bank’s “One Country, One QR” initiative, which is designed to provide a common QR standard across participating banks and payment providers. For merchants, interoperability can reduce the need to display different codes for different customer apps. For payment providers, it shifts the competitive focus from the QR image itself toward merchant onboarding, transaction reliability, reconciliation and customer support.

NRBC Bank said its campaign will extend from small roadside vendors to retail outlets and shopping malls. That scope matters because the commercial value of an interoperable QR scheme depends on routine acceptance at merchants with different transaction volumes and operating capabilities. Distributing a code is only the first step; sustained use will also depend on merchant education, dependable settlement and customers having a compatible app and funded account.

A campaign, not a completed national rollout

The July 5 activity establishes the start of NRBC Bank’s campaign and confirms that merchant onboarding took place in Motijheel. It does not establish national transaction volumes, active-merchant totals or a timetable for reaching every part of Bangladesh. The bank did not disclose campaign-wide adoption targets, pricing or settlement terms in its announcement.

Payments operators should therefore read the development as an acceptance-expansion program rather than proof that cash has been displaced. The near-term indicators will be how broadly NRBC Bank enrolls merchants outside the launch area, whether merchants continue to accept Bangla QR after onboarding, and whether interoperable payments are reconciled consistently across participating institutions.
